Uber prices vs Casino

I just took a look at prices for comparison purposes for Uber and Casino and both are almost identical. Not a good sign for Uber. I've used Uber in 9 countries and it was flawless and waaaaay cheaper, but it doesn't look that way in Halifax right now. Maybe it's because of Covid (who knows), but there are only a handful of drivers available on the Peninsula right now, but ya the prices are almost identical with Casino's prices.

Enewsletter - Coronavirus Update 38 – the second wave hits our shores

This update was posted in the afternoon of November 24, 2020. The situation is rapidly changing. Please check the Canada, Nova Scotia and Halifax websites for the most up to date information.
You can also check out my recently updated COVID-19 resources, with information on current Government Response, Individuals & Families, Business as well as Links to Resources including key social media to follow.

Coronavirus Update 38 – the second wave hits our shores.

Hi all,
As you are probably aware that today the government of Nova Scotia announced new measures to help control the spread of Coronavirus.
I have included both the provincial and Halifax press releases below but in short:
New rules announced for Halifax- the following are closed for at least 2 weeks.
Everyone at a gathering over 5 will be fined $1000 not just the host. Thank you Dr. Strang & Premier for responding to D7 resident’s concerns!
I encourage residents to call police non-emergency 902.490.5020 to report public health order violations.
I support everything I am hearing from Dr Strang and the Premier McNeil around these new restrictions. Based on other provinces’ slow response, this is more than I expected and is actually pretty much everything I hoped for.
You may remember me repeatedly talking over the last 8 months about the Hammer and the Dance. We are now dancing like lives depend on it.
Steps like this are what we need to stop this second wave.
Before I get to the details I have two things to say.
Don’t look for loopholes.
Like any other minimum standard, what the government announced today is the least you should do. Do more, if you can.
So this means – don’t go the house in Chester, or the cottage, or your mum’s place in the country, if you are lucky enough to have those things. Don’t drive the valley for the day to eat and do some shopping. Don’t skirt the gathering limits. If we all really really stay away from each other we will see the numbers move in the right direction in 10-14 days.
But we all need to do our part. No one is special, no one is exempt.
That said, do what you have to do. Go to the doctors, go to school, go to work, but wash your hands, wear a mask, maintain physical distance, and install the app on your phone. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/covid-alert.html
And finally as Dr Strang said today “Turn your fear and anxiety around and say ‘what am I gonna do to bring a sense of control for myself and a sense of control for my community’?”
We have a lot of people in need in our community. Businesses desperate for an order for delivery, charities who need cash to help those in need, international and even Canadian students who are going to be stuck here for the holidays, seniors and others who are cut off from their families.
What can you do to ease another’s burden? I urge you to think about what help you can offer, as you are able, to help support others in our community.
Together we will get through this.
I had a lot of other non-covid stuff to put in a newsletter but I’m going to hold that until later this week, as much of it is likely to change as events cancel.
Be kind, be patient, and take care of each other.
COVID APP ISSUE
If you use an Android phone, the covidalert app has an important update that you might have to manually install from the Google app store. This is very important because it looks like, despite the little green thumbs-up, the app hasn’t been checking for exposures on many Android systems. The update is supposed to address this. Go into Google Play, click on installed apps, and check to make sure you have the latest version.

The 10 Commandments of Covered Call writing – from a seasoned Professional

The 10 Commandments of Covered Call writing – from a seasoned Professional

https://preview.redd.it/7qdqvlupi3l51.jpg?width=654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3080e92ce67f159130b53dd18a3865fb39125d72
The 10 Commandments of Covered Call writing
Covered Call writing has become the mainstay of my market exposure. It is my bread and butter, so to speak. I’ve implemented this strategy since 2003, dealing mostly with positions on the US stock markets. And while how I approach this strategy has changed very little in more than 10 years, there are some subtle influences that define my successful implementation of this strategy.
In an effort to make this article a little more interesting, I thought I’d compile those trading rules in the form of the 10 Commandments of Covered Call writing. Just like the biblical Ten Commandments, these instructions act as a guideline to those who have faith (in the strategy).

Commandment 1: Thou shalt Know your strategy. Know your approach

Wanting to make money from the markets, and knowing how you make money from the markets are two very different functions. You won’t be able to adopt the Covered Call strategy successfully without knowing what dynamics are and how the strategy reacts to various market conditions. I’ve taken 10 years to fine tune how I approach the Covered Call. And even with a profound understanding of what action to take, changing market conditions always produce periods of hard decision making.
The more you practice and implement this strategy, the better you will understand its Risk and benefits. Hence, learning from a successful Covered Call writer, and seeking advice from a licensed broker will only help in your development.

Commandment 2: Though Shalt be Patient

The Covered Call strategy is not a short-term, get rich quick approach. Success comes from Time Decay in the option value. Hence, you need time to pass for this strategy to become profitable.
Too often I see traders jumping onto any Covered Call that shows high returns. There is a sweet spot for option writing that produces approximately 2.5% to 3.5% for any given month. This range has a higher probability of success over searching for high premium returns or directional movements.
Have patience to find these trades, especially when market conditions are not suitable for the type of strategy.

Commandment 3: Though Shalt not Risk more for Profit

Money Management is a key to successful investing in the stock market. Placing all your capital onto one trade is no better than going down to the casino and placing all your money on black! You lose, and you will lose big.
Devise a money management plan. For example, if you have $100,000 for investing in the stock market, diversify this into 10 different positions with $10,000 on each trade. Don’t increase any one particular trade because you “think it is a better trade”. Murphy’s law is that it will be this one trade that ends up being the biggest loss of all.

Commandment 4: Remember, consistency is key

Having operated the Covered Call strategy for more than 10 years, I have plenty of statistical data to back up my understanding of this strategy. But extensive studies have also been conducted by the Australian Stock Exchange. The following link will provide you with additional information: http://www.asx.com.au/products/s-and-p-asx-buy-write-index.htm
Bottom line is that in any given month I expect an average win to loss ratio of 80%. That is, out of 10 trades I will have 8 winners and 2 losses. This is over a 5 year period, noting that there will be years where extended Bear markets will show weaker performance, and extended Bull markets will show improved performance.
Your long-term returns will not be based on a single trade. Trades conducted each month, and from year to year will help to provide a guideline on what your expected performance should be.
📷
We only have a few rules around here, but we really enforce them

Commandment 5: Bear witness to your Exit strategy. Don’t hold your trades when markets shift against you.

The greatest Risk of the Covered Call strategy is that share prices will fall. Too often I see traders holding stocks that are trending downwards. Irrespective of the fundamentals of the company, if the share price breaks support, forms a downwards trend or breaches your exit stop, there is a higher probability that it will continue downwards. Why continue holding it?
You must be disciplined to act on your exit strategies no matter what your personal view is of the company. For the times when the share price bounces back, there will be twice as many times when the share price continues falling.

Commandment 6: Revere your analysis and learn from past performance

If you don’t know how to choose a stock for a Covered Call, then you will have to learn. At the same time, you must have confidence in your analysis and decision making process. This comes with time and experience. But realise this, even the professionals sometimes second guess their decisions.
Covered Calls require fundamentally strong companies that have a high probability of holding in a sideways price pattern, or shifting upwards, within a set time-frame. You need to learn how to identify these companies, but also understand what influences there will be during the time-frame you hold the trade.
For example, earnings reports can have a positive or negative influence on stock values. For this reason, I prefer not to enter a Covered Call if that underlying stock is scheduled to release earnings before expiration of the sold call option.

Commandment 7: Though shalt keep records of trading history so as to learn

If you don’t keep records, you won’t know where you make your mistakes. Consistency is key, as previously mentioned, and your statistical history will show you when your approach is performing well, and when it is not. With this data, you can identify weaknesses in your strategy, or at the very least, find comfort in the fact that maybe it was the markets that underperformed, and not your approach to the strategy.

Commandment 8: Covet Time Decay

Covered Call writing is all about Time Decay. That is, we enter a position say 1-month from expiration of the option contracts. And at the end of the month, the option will lose Time Value. If we have sold an option and received say $1.00 per share, if it remains Out of The Money (OTM) on expiration day, then it will be worthless. That is, we retain the $1.00 per share that we originally received for selling the Covered Call.
But writing Covered Calls for longer time-frames does not necessarily mean better returns. Statistical data proves that the ideal window for writing Covered Calls is between 30 and 45 days from option expiration. This is where the majority of Time Decay will occur.

Commandment 9: Honour your goals. Know what is achievable, what is realistic, and what is a dream.

Not only do you need to know how to adopt the strategy and how to manage it, but you need to have a broader game plan in place. Simply “making money” is not the key. You need to have goals of consistency in performance, and in execution.
If you are looking to make a million dollars overnight, the Covered Call strategy is not for you. This strategy is a slow grinding, consistent approach to making smaller percentage returns. But as you accumulate and compound, it is a strategy that has proven to outperform the broader market (reference to leading market indices) almost each and every year.
Don’t search for high return Covered Calls as this is a low probability trade. Realistically, the Covered Call is optimal between 2.5% to 3.5% per month.

Commandment 10: Choose ITM/ATM/OTM according to broader market/economy cycles.

Knowing how to implement your Covered Call also requires an outlook of the broader stock market and economy. This strategy profits from sideways to rising markets. Hence, by being able to identify suitable market conditions will help establish a higher probability of success.
A simple method I use to evaluate broader stock market direction is to use a 50-day & 100-day moving average combination, over a leading market index such as the S&P500 or the ASX200. When this indicator identifies a bullish market, I adopt Out of The Money (OTM) positions. When the market slips in between the 50/100 combination, I enter At The Money (ATM) or In The Money (ITM) Covered Calls. And when a Bear market is identified, I don’t adopt the Covered Call strategy at all.

Four questions for Winnipeg Folks

I am from Halifax and I am working in your fine city Nov 18-28. I have been there before and been to every museum except for the human rights one(CMHR) which I will goto this time. I have four questions:
-Anyone been to the Friday night opening of the CMHR? Any good or should I just go during the regular daytime hours?
-Is the aquarium tunnel (I love that thing) still at the Regent Casino?
-In Halifax we have lots of bars with exposed brick, dark wood, vintage lighting and so on. I am interested instead in hitting up smaller restaurant chains like Fatburger and Denny's which we do not have out here. Are there any 2nd tier chain restaurants you like in Winnipeg?
-Man I love food. Any good meal deals in your city?

Uber/Lyft will be a subject of today's Regional Council meeting

UPDATE : my thoughts...
update 2 : Clarification on Casino taxi pres comments, he states that removing zoning issues for taxi licenses will allieviate much of the supply problem for Halifax peninsula, negating a full 600 additional licenses.
Today's Regional Council meeting at 1PM should be interesting. It's at 1841 Argyle st.
If any of you have had any interest with the ongoing saga of Halifax vs The Future, today might prove enlightening.
TL;DR: Council spent a lot of time discussing moot points, not sure why we're not just listening to the population and data now that it's all pretty unanimous.
wayemason, since this was my first regional council I've attended, and you're the only one I know on reddit, I hope you don't mind me directing some concerns to you. It will be a little difficult to avoid condescending tones, but I'll try! (not directed at you, but at the nature of the council I witnessed in general)
1) Why so much time spent discussing video quality, storage concerns of data for taxi cameras?
My thoughts: On my phone, while sitting in the council audience, I researched and calculated that you can store about 120 days of video on 2 terabytes. I can get access to 2TB of storage for $13.99 a month. So if I can get a year of storage access to more than 120 days of footage, and a dash cam for ~$230. I really don't understand why it was such a concern to the council members or cab drivers.
2) General philosophy of of cameras in cabs
My thoughts: And I think other people's thoughts as well; nobody cares. Every store, or place of business you walk into, you are recorded. Inside of a taxi is a place of business, logically it follows that one could be recorded while the transaction is taking place, just like how I'm recorded when I pump, or pay for gas, etc.. Recording the business of transportation would never magically solve issues of safety, I don't believe the woman making the presentation made that claim, but it only has room to improve it. No one will get hurt because there's cameras in the cab.
One councillor stated something to the degree of "Do I really want a camera in my face when I get into a cab after I've been drinking?" Does he really need to be informed that he was recorded in whatever establishment he was drinking in before he got in the cab? Or that it's not really middle-aged, able-bodied men getting sexually assaulted that prompted this discussion in the first place?
3) All of these previous points should have been irrelevant
My thoughts: Why are we talking about regulating cabs? With discussions of cameras, expediting female taxi driver applications, enforcing age limits on vehicles? The taxi industry will evolve on their own, provided there is competition; but there is none!
All of the previous points become irrelevant if there is competition introduced.
If I don't feel safe in a coffee shop, or I don't like their coffee, or their barristas are mean.. I go to a different coffee shop. If you follow my analogy, taxis in Halifax are a one-coffeeshop model. The underperforming business will improve (or not) if there is competitors. But the citizens, the customers, don't care. We're just trying to get from point A to B, so let us pick the way to do that, and let some of the benefits of capitalism do the work.
More thoughts
Service industries exist purely for the consumer. If Mayor Savage could wave a magic wand and make every Haligonian have perfect eye sight forever, would he choose not to, due to pressure from optometrists and lens crafters? I surely hope not. Yet this is what we're doing with this aspect of the transportation industry.
Until the advent of better bike lanes, bus routes, ferries? rails? TNC's provide a lovely band-aid solution. Even better, we've seen the best ways to implement based on the successes and failures of other cities! Toronto has apparently given too many licenses, New York has deemed itself to hit an upper limit at ~0.9% of population (Toronto's being 2.7%).
1,600 licenses (600 additional) would put Halifax just shy of 0.4%, less than half of New Yorks self described upper limit. (I'm dividing # of licenses / population serviced)
I learned today:
My interpretation of this is: that a professional organization identified Halifax based demand for 600 additional drivers, but 10 years isn't practical to fill that gap, and the president of a major player in the industry doesn't even want to fill the gap.
So let another player fill it? I mean it's like Halifax council hearing that many people don't like its single, super busy coffee shop, but won't let another one open.
conclusion
I truly don't understand what I'm missing here. I guess I was surprised how uninformed many of the councillors (not all) sounded when it came to these basic economic principles. Reddit is the place for exhibiting the flaws of capitalism, but this is literally what the system excels at.
I'm sorry for vent, but I suppose I was just a bit disappointed to see some stereotypes be lived up to.
Other observations
Why was everyone drawing so much attention to the presenter losing her voice? As an audience member, it seemed a little juvenile, the lack of tact, listening to every councillor give their witty remark on her voice.
wayemason , I sincerely appreciate that councillors and city officials are in the always in the spotlight, and have people like me scrutinizing your every move. Please know that I do think, by and large, councillors are doing their best and I appreciate the work they do. It's just in situations like this, when a population and the data are speaking so clearly, but no one is listening... it gets frustrating.
